I felt my heart start to race as my skin prickled incessantly, as if I'd rolled in a bed of nettles from scalp to waist. Instinctively I knew it was the fish I'd just eaten. But I hadn't been enjoying moules marinieres or prawns, which we typically associate with food poisoning. The potential culprits also include other fish that have 'dark' meat, such as mackerel, sardines and anchovies. Problems are caused when the fish isn't adequately preserved after it's caught. This then converts the amino acid histidine, which occurs naturally in the fish, into histamine. Histamine is a substance released in the body during an allergic reaction. Dr Gnanakumaran agrees, adding: 'If there is any question mark over your reaction, see your GP and request a simple blood test or skin-prick test to clarify whether you were suffering from a true allergic reaction or were a victim of scombroid poisoning. A week on, I still can't face eating tuna - the thought of consuming even slightly decaying fish makes me feel queasy. I'm just grateful I was eating alone that night so my husband and toddler son didn't suffer with me.
And I'd urge others, if they suspect their tuna could be toxic, to put down their knife and fork, too.
